Greetings from the 2012-2013 Surg Techs!
Since this is the first blog from this class, let's start at the beginning...
We began class in August with great anticipation and tenacity; all of us looking for ways to start a new life. Expectations were high and excitement abounded. Then...we started Medical Terminology and Anatomy/Physiology...at the same time...with a test every day...and work books...and study guides...and deadlines...
Fast forward 6 weeks, and we have our first final, Anatomy/Physiology tomorrow. In some ways, it couldn't get here fast enough, in others, it got here entirely TOO fast. At this point, we're all on EVOLVE, cramming our brains with the last bits of info, grasping for the last bits of sanity as we prepare for a test that counts for 20% of our grade. (By the way, USE THE EVOLVE. Seriously).
If it sounds rough, it is. BUT, this is the hard part. Learning the general information is a necessity to move into the more "fun" aspects, like labs and clinicals. Speaking of, Mrs. Laymon had mercy on us one day and let us dissect pig hearts a few weeks ago! We had just started the Circulatory chapter, so seeing the structures we were reading about was interesting and helped it to make more sense. IT WAS SO AWESOME!
To top it off, we'll end A/P with the final tomorrow (wish us luck!), and dissecting an entire piglet! We're all excited about this, especially since it'll be something different than book work. It'll also give us a little more incite into what we'll be getting into when clinicals start.
Check back with us on Thursday after our finals (we also have Medical Terminology on Thursday), and we'll have pics up of our piglets, news of our final success, as well as what we're getting into next!

Hey, hey, hey,
We know you have not heard from us for a couple of weeks, so let us fill you in.
First today which is the 29th of May is our last day. We just completed our final and now completing end of year paper work.
Last week was a complete week of review of the whole year as we were preparing for our certification exam. It was hard to say the least. We all walked away feeling unsure if we passed or not, but our instructor informed us that was a very normal feeling. Now we must wait a couple of weeks to hear from AST to know if we passed or not.
This year has been a great year, any of you considering Surgical Technology will find it rewarding. We are not going to say it is easy because it is not. Very hard and intense course but if you manage your time well you will do just fine.
It is hard for us to believe that this year is done and we are on our way to finding jobs, some of us already have jobs and will be going to work as soon as possible. That is awesome.
Well to all of you Surg Tech want a be our advise to you is go for it, you will not regret it. The graduating class of 2012 is logging off.
Good Luck to the class of 2013, and have a blast while you are here it will be worth it.

We are on the home stretch of clinical. WAHOOOOO!!! This is the last week and we are sooo looking forward to saving the gas money and making the money when we graduate. It has been a long and arduous journey. Getting up at 4am and getting home by 4:30 makes for a long day. Studying very hard for the Certification exam which will be on May 21st, please pray!!!
On a positive note we are more confident and comfortable in the OR, and the scrub role. So far 15 weeks of clinical will reinforce confidence.
Off to scrub have a great week!

Today is Monday, April 16, 2012. We are now on Week 10 of clinical and we are getting so pumped about completing our clinical and taking our Certification exam so that we can become Certified Surgical Technologist and begin to work in this awesome career.
Some of us have seen what is commonly called and ORIF in surgery this week. That stands for Open Reduction Internal Fixation, it pertains to orthopedic type of procedures where the surgeons use various sizes of screws and plates to fixate the fractured bone.
Will be in clinical for the rest of the week hope all have an awesome week as we are. Will talk next Monday.

Week 9 of clinical rotation is done, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Somebody in this class was able to scrub in on a Carotid Endarterectomy. She was very excited to see this procedure. Another scrubbed in on a nasal Septoplasty, and tapped away the cartilage of the nasal septum with a mallet. Yet another student was able to scrub in and assist with a total mastectomy.
Pressed for time going into week 10 clinical and will talk next week.

Hey, hey , hey...
We have returned from an awesome spring break, and just got done with week 8 of our clinicals. We all felt a little rusty from being off for three weeks, but now we're back and kicking it in gear. Everyone's just doing fantastic and receiving complements from their hospitals.
For those of us that have changed clinical locations there is another big adjustment for the class to go through. We have to adjust to new doctors and staff as well as their preferences, policies, and personalities.
Some examples of great surgical procedures that we were able to scrub consisted of: septoplasty (nose reconstruction,) foreign body removal (B.B. from hand,) carpal Tunnel, ACL Reconstruction (anterior cruciate ligament,) a sternal debridment, and a C-Section to deliver a beautiful baby girl.
It was an affirming week, and confidence is skyrocketing. Tomorrow we will start week 9 and we all look forward to sharing our experiences with you next week. Be sure to check back.

Welcome to the blog
The Surgical Technology class of 2012 says hey, hey!!
This class began in August of 2011, and we have completed 13 courses out of 16. Today we did Mock Job interviews and it's been a very eventful week.
The class has come a long way. On the first day of class we were a little intimidated, to say the least. No one really knew what to expect much less know what a Surgical Technologist was.
Some common misconceptions that students had included responsibilities of surg techs. No one knew how complex it was going to be. It turns out it is harder to learn what not to do than do in surgery. As we spent time in lab we were learning without even realizing how much we were preparing for clinicals a.k.a. the real thing.
Now we are in the clinical phase and off the mannequin. The first week of surgery we were in shock and awe as we were faced with real patients laying on the OR table. Here we are beginning stage three of our clinicals and we encourage you to check back with us as we progress towards graduation and becoming real surgical technologists.
